Road cycling: skills, pacing and event preparation
Good road riding is built on predictable bike handling, situational awareness, sensible pacing and equipment you trust.
Start with control, not speed
Practice smooth braking, holding a line, looking through corners and drinking while riding before adding high-intensity work or large group rides. Predictable movement protects both you and the riders around you.
Group-riding basics
- Hold a steady line and avoid abrupt changes in speed.
- Point out hazards when it is safe to do so.
- Do not overlap wheels unnecessarily.
- Leave extra space in wet or windy conditions.
Pacing longer rides
For endurance rides, start easier than you think you need to. A pace that feels modest in the first hour often produces a stronger final hour than repeated early surges. Fuel and hydrate according to ride duration, conditions and personal tolerance.
Before an event
Confirm the route, start time, weather, event rules and equipment requirements with the organiser. Check tyres, brakes, drivetrain and fasteners ahead of time rather than the morning of the race.
