MTB fundamentals: setup, control and trail preparation
Mountain biking rewards balance, line choice and braking control. A well-set-up bike and realistic route choice matter more than chasing speed too early.
Tyres and pressure
Tyre pressure depends on tyre volume, rider mass, terrain, casing and whether you run tubes or tubeless. Too much pressure can reduce grip; too little can cause rim strikes, burping or pinch flats. Make small changes and keep notes.
Braking technique
Brake before the most technical part of a corner where possible, then ease pressure as grip and line allow. Use both brakes progressively rather than relying entirely on one wheel.
Climbing and descending
On climbs, select a gear early and keep traction smooth. On descents, stay mobile on the bike, look ahead, and choose a speed that leaves room for unexpected changes in trail surface.
